🎮 Alif or Yaa?

The soft alif at the end of a three-letter Arabic verb

📖 About this game

A game on the Arabic spelling lesson of the soft alif in three-letter verbs, whose summary says that the soft alif at the end of such verbs is written either as an upright alif or in the shape of a yaa. Why the two buttons are two present-tense forms rather than the two spellings: the book makes the distinction an act rather than a label, and its practice activity says turn the verbs above into the present tense following the given example, then sort the verbs by the origin of their alif. So the game is that activity itself: a learner who picks the present form has taken the verb back and found the origin of its alif, while one who picks the spelling directly may merely have memorised the look of the word. The distractor is not random but the other present-tense form, which is the expected mistake itself: a learner who believed the origin was a yaa picks the yaa-ending present. The word is shown in the question without its alif, because the alif is the answer, so it is written only after the tap and the present tense appears beside it as proof of its origin. The answer is computed from the spelling of the verb rather than typed by hand. Five verbs whose alif comes from a waaw and five from a yaa; the balance is not optional. This English twin teaches Arabic rather than translating it. No sign-up.

🕹️ How to play

  1. Read the past-tense Arabic verb with its soft alif removed.
  2. Turn the verb into the present tense in your head.
  3. Tap the correct present form — its ending tells you how the alif is drawn.
  4. Every verb you get first try counts for you.
