🎮 Order of Operations

Brackets, then multiply and divide, then add and subtract

📖 About this game

A game about the order of operations, the fourth lesson in the algebra, number patterns and functions chapter. An arithmetic expression appears and the question asks which operation to start with; the steps of the solution are then shown in full, line by line, down to the result. The question asks for the first step rather than the final result because a child can hit the result by luck while getting the order wrong, and the mistake never shows. Each choice carries both its operands rather than the sign alone, because an expression can hold two operations of the same rank. Six questions answer to the first choice and six to the second, so the child never answers by position. No sign-up.

🕹️ How to play

  1. Read the whole expression.
  2. Look for brackets first; if there are none, look for multiplication and division.
  3. If two operations are the same rank, start from the left.
  4. Every expression you get first try counts for you.
